Profile

Madilyn Fletcher was recently named Director (Interim) of the School of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (SEOE) at the University of South Carolina.  The SEOE was created in 2009 to bring together the major environmentally-focused units in the College of Arts and Sciences to promote interdisciplinary interactions among faculty and students and the creation of even stronger research and educational opportunities, learning experiences, and societal impacts.  Until July 2011, she was Director of the Environment and Sustainability Program (formerly the School of the Environment ), which addresses complex environmental problems and issues that range from natural habitats to human society development. She was also Director of the Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences from 1996 to 2006. In these leadership roles over the past 15 years, she has had a strong interest in regional partnering and the development of initiatives that coordinate strong science with real-world applications and needs. During this time, Madilyn has also been heavily involved in the development and implementation of regional ocean observing systems, and particularly in aspects related to optimizing access and utility of ocean and coastal information.  She was PI of the Carolinas Coastal Ocean Observing and Prediction System, which has now transitioned into the Carolinas Regional Coastal Ocean Observing System, and she has had leadership positions in the Southeast Atlantic Coastal Ocean Observing System, and the Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association.

As an individual investigator and microbiologist, Madilyn Fletcher's research program focused on aspects of bacterial attachment to solid surfaces, physiological activity of attached bacteria, and molecular characterization of bacterial communities. This research resulted in over 90 publications, including six edited books.  She has also served on a variety of journal editorial boards and was Editor-in-Chief of Microbial Ecology for 11 years.
