Dear Colleague,

I invite you to consider becoming a member of the School of the Environment (SOE).  There are presently over 150 faculty associated with the SOE, and they represent many diverse disciplines and interests, with home departments in the sciences, humanities, and the various USC professional colleges and schools.  Recently, we also hired two new tenure track faculty as collaborative appointments with the Department of Economics in the Moore School of Business and the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences.  Additional searches for collaborative faculty are underway.

SOE Faculty Departmental Affiliations

Faculty Research Areas

As the SOE was recently moved into the College of Arts and Sciences, we reviewed the process for appointing new faculty and made a few changes. The process for applying for membership is as follows:
  • Send a letter requesting membership to the Director of the School of the Environment, Dr. Madilyn Fletcher.

  • Include in the letter
  • Your contact information

  • A brief description of your research focus, particularly as it relates to environmental sciences or studies.

  • A brief description of your educational interests and their relationship to environmental subject areas.

  • A brief description of any service or outreach activities that relate to the environment.

  • Your reasons for joining the School of the Environment and what you would like to gain from membership in the SOE.
  • Attach a note from your Department Chair supporting your application (this could also be a signature of approval on your letter of application).

  • Attach a current CV.

Applications are reviewed by the School of the Environment Advisory Committee, and you should receive a response within one to two months.

The SOE sponsors the undergraduate minor in Environmental Studies, the Master of Earth and Environmental Resources Management (MEERM) degree, and a joint Law/MEERM degree program.  We are also in the process of seeking approval for an undergraduate major in Environmental Sciences. Your courses may be attractive and appropriate for major, minor, or MEERM students.  Please inform us if you teach a course related to environmental processes, interactions between humans and the environment, or other topics relevant to environmental issues or concepts.  As an SOE member, you may also serve as a MEERM thesis advisor, as MEERM students are looking for innovative and non-traditional ways to channel their energies in environmental issues.

These are exciting times for the SOE.  We expect to see considerable expansion of our programs, with numerous opportunities for collaborative projects and initiatives, both within the university and with a variety of public and private partners.  We enthusiastically welcome new members who wish to expand their engagement in environmental research, education, and outreach and to join the SOE community of researchers, scholars, students, and staff.

Sincerely,

Director
