Environmental Management
Systems (EMS)
An EMS is an environmental management tool to assist in better regulatory
compliance, waste reduction, increased employee awareness and improvements in
overall business operations. Faculty and students in the School of the
Environment (SOE) have worked with multinationals, small companies, and state,
and federal agencies in ISO 14001 EMS training, implementation and auditing.
Industrial Ecology Program
The Industrial Ecology Program of the USC School of the Environment is a
service organization for industries, agencies and communities interested in
environmental, health and safety regulatory compliance and pollution
prevention. A unique feature of the IEP is the Waste Market Development Program
which assists businesses in finding monetary value for waste, as opposed to
paying fees for disposal. A new direction for IEP is the coordination of the
Palmetto State Clean Fuels Coalition focusing on alternative fuels both vehicle
usage and infrastructure development.
Laboratory for
Sustainable Solutions (LSS)
The Laboratory for Sustainable Solutions is currently performing integrated,
systems engineering research in the areas of sustainable economic development
and eco-industrial parks including a system for measuring and predicting
sustainable development indicators, systems modeling for sustainable industrial
ecosystems, and the development of "green"/sustainable building tools and
information sharing.
Environmental Health Sciences
Environmental Health Sciences is primarily concerned with interactions of
humans with the environment. Study in the school focuses on the adverse effects
of environmental conditions or contamination on human health and the unfavorable
impacts of human activities on the environment. One of the specific research
areas is Industrial Hygiene.
